1-7 These are toggle keys. The superscript numbers indicate the position of the akara in the toggle cycle, e.g. n1 i.e. n > , n2 i.e. nn > , and n3 i.e. nnn > ஞ. Press each of these keys several times in a row to see how it works.

The key x serves three functions: (1) it breaks a toggle cycle and moves the cursor on to the next akara, e.g. ii > , but ixi> இஇ; (2) it prevents a Pulli from combining two contiguous akaras into a single composite akara, e.g.  k.S > க்ஷ but k.xS > க்‌ஷ; and (3) it inserts the composite akara க்ஷ at the cursor location, e.g. xx > க்ஷ.
