English

Welcome to the use of this new keyboard for Tem!

Who: This keyboard version is for people who want to type in Tem on their Android smartphone, iPhone or iPad. The design favors touch screen layout most commonly used for single finger typing. Tem is ISO639-3 language code KDH, spoken by over 500,000 people with homeland villages primarily in Togo’s central region, Benin & Ghana, and significant populations in other countries.

Why: This keyboard will permit users to type Tem in Emails, WhatsApp, Facebook, and other blogs.

How: Since most Tem are located in Togo and Benin, the base keyboard is the French AZERTY layout but with all Tem special characters available with a single touch. Special vowels ɛ ʊ ɩ ɔ and letters ç ɖ ŋ are all available on the top row, normally used for numbers.

All diacritic marks [ ́ ̀ ̈ ̂ ] (accent ague, grave, dieresis, circumflex) are typed after the base letter, and are located on the right side of the keyboard. The most common mark in Tem will be the HI tone accent, located just right of [m] on a French keyboard.

Common punctuation marks have all been moved to the main keyboard page, so a complete sentence can by typed including , . ? – ’ with no need to use Shift. Users can also switch between English, French, and Tem without switching keyboards.

Fonts: This keyboard will work with any Unicode font, but the placement of accents looks a little better on a font that has been created by SIL. Andika's design takes into account the needs of beginning readers. The focus is on clear, easy-to-perceive letter forms that will not be readily confused with one another. One can download the latest version of the font here.
